What the Exhibitors Produced:

Adorned:
ROOM THEME: African
Adorned Homes exhibits a design inspired by South Africa’s traditional ethnic-print indigo cloth - Shweshwe.
 |
Shweshwe cloth has been around since the 17th century in South Africa and has since been an integral part of Xhosa, Zulu, Swasi, Sesotho and Tswana cultures. Since it is not culture specific, we can celebrate the diversity of South African culture by its use and wear it with pride. Recently Shweshwe has taken the catwalks of the world by storm. There is thus no reason why the decor business should not be taking this once humble clothevery bit as seriously as the fashion industry does.
African decor does not have to be earth tones or animal prints. Those themes are over-exposed by now. However, the world is enamoured by all things African, therefore, we now introduce a fresh take on the African theme:
We combine blue denim, the most popular of all indigo cloth internationally, strong and always fashionable, with our own blue and red shweshwe. Denim and Shweshwe, ever available and inexpensive, working together to show a South African inspired interior that works on a budget. |
Primary colours and simple accents makes it fresh and young, yet brimmingwith African character. |

Charming Decorators
ROOM THEME: Black & White
 |
|
Charmaine Hansen, owner of Charming Decorators obtained an International Profes-sional Interior Decorating certification through Magi Malan School of Interior and Style in November 2007. Magi Malan is currently the only City & Guilds International Assessor in South Africa. Charming Decorators is committed to provide customers with style on a budget for creating “feel good” spaces that matches the individual or companies style preferences.
A black and white theme was chosen, creating a dramatic, yet comfortable living room. Plum was introduced to add contrast and create interest. The intention is to create aware-ness that ordinary rooms can still be pleasing, without costing a fortune and that stylish living can be part of everybody’s life. |

DIY Divas
ROOM THEME: DIY
WE SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN DESIGNER FURNITURE AT A PRICE YOU CAN AFFORD
 |
|
“What’s different about this room setting is that everything will be made from scratch as do-it-yourself projects.” says Janice Anderssen, founder and owner of DIY Divas. “We’re already busy designing and building all the furniture for the show, with emphasis on piec-es that are easy to make and will look good in any home.”
Projects will include:
TV and Entertainment Unit
Display Unit
Frame Decorative Mirror
Sofa
Coffee Table
DIY Divas will also be decorating the room with easy paint techniques that you can easily do yourself at home.Don’t expect any glam over-the-top finishes, this room setting promises to be a room that anyone can create with a few basic power tools and affordable materials. |
“We firmly believe that do-it-yourself should be easily accessible for anyone wanting to make their own furniture and we all want our home to look beautiful, but not many of us can afford the designer price tags.” says Anderssen. “The projects incorporated into the room set-ting are practical, affordable and, most importantly, easy to make for the average DIY enthusiast.”
You will also be able to try the projects for yourself after the show, as we will be running the step-by-step instructions for each project on Homemakers Online and on www.Home-Dzine.co.za after the show.

Sublime Interiors
ROOM THEME: Eclectic Scheme
The beauty of an eclectic scheme is that you can combine different styles together.
Even if you went for a completely contemporary style you may have an antique heirloom that you just have to use in your scheme, the trick is making sure it doesn’t stand out, but blends into the scheme.
 |
|
I have used an example in my room...
The flooring with its grey tones was a great starting point for the room.
I used a traditional wall paper that was inspired by nature; it is striking but does not dominate the room.
The repetitive use of modern hi gloss mirrors, does not detract from the pattern of the wallpaper as a painting or print might, but acts as a focal point in the room. I love the use of mirror as it reflects items around the room.
The style of couch is modern with clean lines and the use of metallic vinyl on the base makes it quite edgy, but it is softened by the use of a classical damask pattern on the back and seat cushions.
The luxurious velvet diamond buttoned ottoman with its turned legs brings in a more traditional feel, while adding another shade of blue to the room.
|
The safari inspired set of boxes brings in another style & texture to the room as well as adding storage space for magazines and unsightly TV and audio remote controls. The silver handles add a bit of shine that has been threaded through the room by using a classical silver lamp and silver leaf tray on the ottoman.
The hi gloss black finish modernises the classical side table to make it blend into the scheme.
The use of copper mosaic vases on the ottoman also adds another shiny texture to the room and adds another layer to the colour scheme threaded through the room.

Succulent Decor
ROOM THEME: ECLECTIC
 |
|
The Succulent Décor team shows in this eclectic living room how a lot of old junk can be transformed, creating a vibrant space for a student or young person, without costing an arm and a leg. We recovered two chairs (from a junk shop @R150ea) and a couch (bought at an auction for only R10!) and gave the chair frames a lick of bright red paint. Our coffee table consists of a grouping of 5 tree stumps found at a tree feller’s yard and brought up to date through the addition of castors and white enamel.
Three standing lamps were cre-ated by using galvanised buckets for lampshades and broomsticks and three more tree stumps for the bases. Plastic crates from Pick-a-Pay make for a quirky bookcase and our window is dressed in brightly coloured ribbon.
For a carpet we painted a piece of canvas in normal PVA and by drawing on it with chalk the floor covering becomes an ever changing talking point in the room. |
