The future has never looked so INNOVATIVE!
HOMEMAKERS Expo is giving participants the chance to show off their creative designs to over 50 000 people over 4 days at the Future of Design!We all know that original and fresh design ideas are what give design its cutting edge.
This incredible feature will include designs that are fresh, modern, and unique products or items that could be used in and around the home.
What is upcycling? It is when you take something old and give it a new lease oflife transforming it into something of better quality and of higher value. ReinerPilz of Pilz GmbH coined the phrase in 1994 when he referred to recycling as down-cycling, stating that what the world needed was more upcycling where old prod-ucts are given more value not less!This year’s Future of Design participants had no specific brief. Designers were in-vited to participate and portray how they saw the future of design in South Africa.Amazingly almost all of them indicated that upcycling will be more than a majortrend, they see it as more than just a passing fad but a lasting theme in design formany years to come.

The pieces i have chosen have been done in a modern high gloss black and a more traditional antique silver to show the public how the different finishes can change the overall look and feel of the products. The different finishes can be done to create the tone of the room.
I personally like to incorporate an elaborate classical frame in a modern high gloss finish into a contemporary setting, fusing different styles together seamlessly.

Milk Deco supplies a unique contemporary range of baby furniture designed by Candice Brophy of CB Designs. She studied Architecture at Wits University and when she became a mother she saw that there was a gap in the market for modern, functional and eco friendly baby furniture. And so she began designing!
Milk Deco strives on its designs being unique and in line with international safety standards. We want to create unique nursery's that are baby friendly, affordable and that parents can enjoy, since they will be the ones spending a reasonable amount of time in them! We also do our best to create 'green' designs that are environmentally friendly by using eco board wherever we can!
Our range includes cots, compactums, a crib, a highchair, linen, wall art, vinyl wall stickers, mobiles, handmade baby blankets, toddler beds and a toddler chair and table set. We are constantly working on new designs to launch on a monthly basis. We also offer a nursery design service to create a unique and functional nursery for mom so she can relax and enjoy her pregnancy.

The Suitcase Chair
A worn-out old suitcase, having been around the block a few times, takes on a glamorous new functional life as a comfortable occasional chair. Steel-reinforced internal structure, upholstered in a cotton ticking fabric, with whitewashed turned timber legs.
The Milk Bottle Lamp
Original Milk Bottles are Redesigned intobedside or desk lamps,
incorparating high tech adjustable arms, state of the art stainless
steel fittings and a milky glass base.
The Upholstered Ottoman Tub
An old rusty galvanized tub is REpurposed as a quirky ottoman. With a verdigree coloured copper recessed base, steel reinforced internal frame and a perfectly finished upholstered top with deep-button and piping detail.

Rooikop To be born a redhead, is to be born somewhat different. You recognise uniqueness, because you yourself are unique. Things aren’t just black and white, colours like strawberry exist, and the world is somewhat better as a result.
In the early months of 2009, an energy saving light bulb lit up over the head of Johannesburg creative and fiery redhead Zoe Willems. Why not give the plastic shopping packet another chance to shine.
What you are about to read, is the story of the little plastic shopping packet. Before it was used solely to carry groceries from the shop till to our cars, but now it has now finally found a purpose, a destiny, and a time to shine.
Instead of chilling in an ugly place where most of our rubbish goes to die, hundreds of plastic packets are cueing up in Zoe Willem’s cupboard, eagerly waiting their extreme makeover into official Rooikop Bags.
The environment is spared as much as 16 plastic packets for every bag made. With its gaining support, Rooikop continues to change the world one bag at a time, and at the same time, promote eco friendly business that’s viable and sustainable. And lastly, you as the customer get to walk away with a custom designed accessory, all the while feeling a little more at peace with yourself and your place in the world.

The bags are colourful, light, and feel different to anything you might have had hanging over your shoulder before. With men’s shoulder bag recently added to the catalogue, all can now get in on the action. Since conception, the bags have been endorsed by the socially conscious fashionistas of Johannesburg, and the outlet valve to the rest of South Africa and the world has been opened.

Dismo
Dismoi Nature creates it and dismoi decorates it!
The dynamic duo from dismoi have taken the humble and down to earth calabash and turned it into an unexpected designer item, set to illuminate any room with its curvy shapes. The calabashes are grown on a farm in the Kalahari, where they are lovingly nurtured and patiently left on the fields to dry naturally. dismoi then transforms these modest vegetables with the utmost respect into illuminating designer decor accessories.
The dismoi calabashes are all hand-finished, each one unique in its shape and design, with either a contemporary white or natural finish. Applications range from freestanding lamps to, outdoor lights, coffee and bedside table lamps and hanging chandeliers

 Timeless Decor: A few months ago I was looking for exclusive décor items everywhere for my home, but couldn’t find any paintings or clocks that inspired me to want to decorate. Then I thought someone else out there must be going through the same décor dilemma, so I thought of making clocks from canvas prints and paintings, but figured I wouldn’t have time to produce enough quantities myself, so I found a factory to make the clocks for me. The end result is what characterises Timeless Décor…decorative clocks that suit both modern and classic taste in décor.
The clocks are made of ceiling board and photo prints and come in a wide range of designs and 2 sizes – 50cmx50cm and 40cmx60cm. They are fitted with sweep movements which make them totally silent and therefore suitable for every room in a house, including the bedroom.

Bindizwe, with a constant consumer craving for new ideas, especially with sustainable living coming to the forefront of design in recent years, a need for up-cycling, renewing and re-purposing was created.
In light of these new trends, Bindizwe Designs was born. Being faced with either replacing defunct, hand-me-down furniture, or funking-up said furniture, she chose the challenge of adding her personal stamp to the dreary furniture around her. Now creating one-of-a kind pieces, Bindizwe has given her clients the option of having completely unique, customized furniture, for less than buying new, run of the mill, chain store products.
